Good Skin and Good Color Go Hand-In-Hand
The title of this weeks blog has been our mantra since the beginning. Good skin does not come into play one week before the wedding. And after a year of wearing face masks brides are easing back into their bridal beauty planning they’ve been asking what extra steps they should be taking to take care of their complexion.
We’re so happy you asked! The spring season is a season of renewal and it’s the perfect time to freshen up your skincare routine. A good skincare routine in the months leading up to your wedding day is essential. With the added impact of trapping our breath under the mask it’s become a bit more challenging.
Maskne, yes, it’s a thing! The hot moist environment created by the mask can breed bacteria and traps oil, sweat and dirt can cause heat rash-like reactions along with flare ups of eczema, rosacea and acne.
To prevent irritations and breakouts you need to be proactive and take some action before the mask goes on. First and foremost wash your face gently to remove oils, dirt and bacteria and apply moisturizer. Avoid comedogenic products, as well as other irritating ingredients such as fragrances.
Choose a mask that suits the environment you’ll be in. The type of fabric that you put against your skin can make a difference. For low-risk situations natural fibers like cotton are the most gentle.
Our top six tips to freshen up your beauty routine for wedding skin care.
Cleanse…Wash With Your Hands
Here’s a secret most dermatologists will tell you: Don’t use a washcloth on your face. Washcloths can harbor bacteria. Instead, use just your hands, choose a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser that does not contain alcohol and lukewarm water and gently wash your face. Avoid scrubbing to hard as this can irritate the skin. Before you begin, use a separate makeup remover to tackle waterproof mascara and long-wearing lipstick. Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry (avoid rubbing) with a soft towel.
Exfoliate
The cold air from winter days brings dry and flaky dreary skin so wake up your skin with exfoliation. Try adding a cleansing brush system or a physical exfoliate to your skin care routine two to three times a week (daily is too much). A physical exfoliate is a face scrub with rough little bits of material that removes layers of dead skin cells. A brush system massages cleansers into your skin as it gently exfoliates. Either technique will deliver much needed moisture to your stressed winter skin.
Energize Your Skin
When it comes to acquiring that oh-so-coveted glow it begins from within. Get plenty of rest daily. The only time our body and skin can repair itself is when we sleep. Sleep deprivation can cause your skin to become dull and pale, allowing for dark tissues and blood vessels beneath your skin to show.
Hydrate
No matter what season it is your skin craves water! Hydrate both your body and your skin by drinking plenty of water and eating foods high in antioxidants and protein to help keep the elastic and prevents wrinkles. Try grapefruit, cucumbers, tomatoes and kale they are all super foods for your face.
Cleanup Your Makeup
Now is the perfect time for some Spring cleaning. While you’re pepping up your your springtime pallet take time to clean up your makeup bag. Makeup builds up germs and bacteria over time so ditch any products that are old or expired and give your brushes a deep clean. Every time you swipe on your blush with a dirty brush, you add a layer of acne-causing bacteria to your skin. Cleaning your brushes is easy, just read our 3 DIY Tips To Clean Your Makeup Brushes to learn more.
Protect your skin
Your skin is worth protecting in every season and a broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen that provides protection from both UVA and UVB rays with a minimum SPF of 30 is a good guideline to choose one that is right for you.
Bonus tip!
Protect your pout! Tackle chapped/cracked lips with a vitamin-e stick daily and remember to use a lip balm with an spf of 30 or higher (especially when you’re enjoying the great outdoors) to keep those lips kissable soft. Add a sugar scrub once a week for a little extra TLC. Want to make sure that your lip color lasts all night (or day) read our 5 tips for the perfect pout.
One last tip about masks on the daily. Go makeup free under the mask if possible. The more oxygen your skin can absorb the better. For a daily pick me up, play up your eyes and try something new with your hair.
Investing your time and investing in quality products now will pay in dividends when you see the final results of your wedding day photography.
