Sometimes a girl meets an amazing family and we quickly become friends. That is the case with Heather and her mom. Hands down they are some of the sweetest- most genuine and gracious ladies I’ve ever met.  We’re so happy they chose Makeup In The 702!  (Before and After for Mom and Heather)

Now on to another AMAZING love story…..the story of Heather & Eli!

Eli and I met in San Francisco 4 1/2 years ago. We met at a Hanukkah party and because parking is so horrible in San Francisco I almost never went. But, luckily a spot opened up right as I drove up.
I came in and saw a woman I knew, and he and his friend knew her, as well. I saw Eli and I noticed him right away. We spoke for a while, and then I left. Though our mutual friend would not give him my number, Eli still managed to find me online.

He emailed me asked me on a date, two dates later I went to Budapest for a month. We spoke over Skype every day, and Eli asked me on our 4th date 3 weeks early for when I came back. That’s when I knew he was serious. He told me that he already decided I was his girlfriend after the first date. I always liked that he said that.

Some advice for brides:
Do what’s right for you. Have people with you on the wedding day that will keep you low stress. Think of everyone’s personality and consider if you were in the same room with all of them during this heightened time would you stay calm and happy?

I did not have bridesmaids as I had been one before and it ruins too many important relationships even in the best of circumstances. But, if you do have bridesmaids consider whether you need an extra moment to be alone before the ceremony (after everyone’s hair and makeup is done) to just be with your mom or a close friend.

If someone asks to throw you a party….let them. They really do want to do it. It took me 6 months to let a dear friend throw me an engagement party because I didn’t want to impose!
Be clear with your vendors about what you want. I was slightly worried that I was coming across harsh because I knew what I didn’t want, but they all seemed to be happy with that attitude because in the end everyone gets what they want. Also, you need to click with them personally! If they are going to be around you on such a special day you need to like them.

FYI – Don’t book expensive B+B’s in Hawaii! Its not worth it, GO TO THE RESORT!

Thank you and much love to Adam Frazier Photography for capturing these spectacular moments!

Las Vegas Photography “Shoot Out”

When you pause to think about how technology has changed our world in just the last twenty years you probably wouldn’t think that it has affected hair and makeup artistry much but you would be surprised.

As a makeup artist I’ve always tried to maintain my education and stay updated with products, tools, training, and techniques. However, over the past 20 years technology in the actual camera has changed tremendously. The days of “pancake makeup” and 35 millimeter cameras and darkroom are almost obsolete.   So how does an old dog learn new tricks and stay current?  Join the national ordination of PUG. PUG stands for Pictage Users Group and the Las Vegas Chapter was spear headed by the lovely Chelsea Nicole of Chelsea Nicole photography.

This group of professional photographers, now 150+ has so graciously allowed me, a makeup artist, to join their group so I can learn right along side with them.

The organization hosts a monthly meeting with its members that is over 150 strong where they discuss the latest photography and business topics, host guest speakers, and just have fun.  I absolutely love that this group of men and women are so open to sharing and educating each other to elevate the level of work produced here in Las Vegas.

Each year PUG holds a “shoot out” where Chelsea Nicole organizes a theme, location and of course style along with education for photographers. This year the shoot out was hosted by Alt f studios, John Michael cooper, Dalisa Cooper, and Chris Purdum of Orange Soda Photo.  Different lighting workstations were set up for the photographers to utilize learning the best lighting techniques for both indoors and out.   Makeup in the 702 was asked to join the learning experience to incorporate the hair and makeup for the models in the different lighting stations.

I asked john Michael cooper of Alt f photography why he gives so much to the organization and his words were “if I help others and give them an education I give them an inspiration to become better and continue to make Las Vegas a sought after photography market”. Wow john wow!!!

I could go on and on and on about how truly AMAZING this group of professional is and how being a member has helped Makeup In The 702 remain an industry leader here in Las Vegas….  but as they say a picture is worth a thousand words!  So please take a moment to browse the galleries below and enjoy the best of the best photos from the workshop all submitted by Chelsea Nicole herself!

When Passion Drives You Grab The Wheel!

biopic1_1366756121As we congratulate the class of 2015 we wish them well and much success in life. High school for most of us is where we started to develop our own ideals and passions that have shaped our lives. This week we met up with Kristen Hansen from KMH Photography this week who tells us high school is where it all started for her. As a member of her high school’s photography club she would spend countless hours perfecting her black and white prints and began experimenting with techniques and discovering her passion for image making. Following college she began shooting weddings and portraits for friends and family, in 2009 she took her passion and created KMH Photography which has really allowed her to find her style, her artistic voice and discover what fulfills her.

I get to work with so many incredibly amazing Las Vegas photographers and am always curious to know what makes it real for them.  Kristen tells us “I adore capturing real moments – real hugs, real tears, real glances, real belly laughs. During each and every wedding, my focus remains on creating memories for the couple. I want my couples to relive the crazy range of emotions they felt on their wedding day – from the nerves to the relief to the pure joy to the teary moments. If I can make them emotional over their images, I consider it a job well done. At the end of the day, that’s what makes this business the most fulfilling. I really have the best job in the world – I get to create art for a living, deliver it to clients who treasure it, and create lasting friendships with really cool people. “

I imagine that you get to work with many other makeup artists in Las Vegas what makes working with Makeup In the 702 different for you?

“Working with Makeup in the 702 is a dream – your stylists and artists are super professional and truly know what they are doing. As a photographer, makeup and hair is so important. You have to trust that their face won’t be a different shade than their neck, that their eyelashes won’t fall off, and that their hair won’t be windblown after being outside for an hour. If I know Makeup in the 702 is working a wedding with me, I know that the bride will be stunning and her hair and makeup will last for hours.”

Las Vegas is the “wedding capital” of the world what would you like a planning couple to know about you and your business?

“I love shooting portraits and weddings in Las Vegas and love traveling to destination locations as well. My packages are all customizable and all include digital hi-res edited images. If you’re not sure how many hours you need or how to plan your wedding day photography, not to fear! I always help my brides create a custom timeline and recommend however many hours work best for them. Just email me at info@kmh-photography.com or call me at 702-285-9588 and I’ll be happy to help!”

It seems that there are so many choices for wedding photography these days what are some common misconceptions that you encounter in your industry?

“One misconception is that photographers are all alike. We all have our own style, personality, technique and method. I’d encourage couples to look online, pick out their favorite portfolios and meet with those photographers in person. Your photographer is going to be with you just as much as your bridal party on your wedding day – it’s important that you mesh with them and feel comfortable around them.” For me personally, I take great pride in connecting with my clients. I want to know them, what they like and who they are. By understanding them and their relationship, I’m able to create better images of them and take their likes and dislikes into account. Having a great relationship with my clients really takes my work to the next level and helps me create some beautiful memories for them.

Every photographer finds their inspiration in different places, are there particular elements or places that inspire your creativity?

“I find inspiration in all sorts of ways! I love art, music, and films. I look at a set of wedding, art and design blogs daily to keep up on any new trends and make sure I’m feeding my creative side. I also love nature and travel, discovering new places always leads to a spark of photo inspiration and an idea of a styled shoot.”

Discovering the joy with Kristen Joy Photography

We get to work with so many absolutely AMAZING photographers here our beautiful city of Las Vegas. Today we are so happy to introduce you to Kristen Joy Photography she truly is a “joy” to work with and seems to experience so much of her own joy from her work.

Happiness lies in the joy of achievement and the thrill of creative effort~Franklin D. Roosevelt

Kristen can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got started as a photographer?

Hmmmm, A little about me, I love weddings, I love all the little details and joy that comes from the day. I love working with brides and seeing their visions come to life. I originally started as a family photographer, when I received the chance to be a second shooter for an amazing photographer, I realized I was missing out on all the fun! I started in 2007 and have been photographing weddings ever since.

I especially love working with you at Makeup in the 702 because you are so talented at what you do. I work to make every individual client happy and it’s hard to find others in this town with the same mindset. I remember working with you on a shoot in the dry lake bed, when I told you my ideas, you were just as excited as I was. I love that you have passion for your work and joy shines through every email and phone call.”

What kind of misconceptions do you think people have about wedding photography?

There can be misconceptions about wedding photography, one that sticks out to me is, when a person sees the photos after the wedding or event and says, “Wow you must have a really nice camera.” It make me giggle a bit, because all though most wedding photographers do have nice cameras, we take our job seriously and consider ourselves artists. I happen to shoot a lot of film photography as well, my film camera probably cost me less than most peoples iphones, but I can produce beautiful works of art on that 35mm camera.

There are a millions benefits to hiring a professional photographer. One major benefit to hiring a professional photographer is you will be able to view your timeless memories over and over with the confidence that they will turn out. I hear people say, “my friend just bought a camera, so he is going to photograph my wedding.” My heart hurts a bit hearing that, you spend so much money on your wedding day and are risking losing those timeless photographs.”

What challenges and inspires you?

I find so much inspiration in Las Vegas, not the Strip and casino Vegas, but the landscape, the Red Rocks, the Dry lake Beds, the succulents, our scenery is so diverse. I love the highlighting that our unique landscape adds to my photographs. I’m so thankful to work in such a fun and inspiring community like Las Vegas. We are a hub of amazing talent and it truly pushes me to be the top in field daily.”
