Las Vegas Wedding Photographers Share 4 Makeup To Do’s for Your Wedding Photos

February 14, 2018

Happy Day To You All!

So delighted to have you hear reading insider tips and information from some of the most respected creatives in Las Vegas. As a makeup artist I continually educate myself and critique each service I give. What can I do better, how can I listen and deliver even more? It’s true, we are our own worst critic, but I use that and run with it. You see, by continuously raising my standards and being humble in the service industry, I’m also able to truly look at my work and business from another perspective and when I have questions, I turn to other leaders and creatives in Las Vegas. Want to know what the inside scoop from photographers is? Read on…

I asked several well-known and well published photographers a simple question “When your photographing your client, what do you wish the makeup artist did or did better?” Yep I went there, and I was ready to hear the good, the bad the ugly. Again, this is from the perspective of the photographer and are pure and true helpful hints and suggestions they had. Please note, no makeup company’s names or artist were mentioned, just pure enlightenment on the question I asked.

Jamie Y tells us that too often she sees brides with foundation that is way to sheer. Jamie goes on to tell me that when she is editing client’s photos, foundation that is to sheer or uneven is something that is almost impossible to fix in editing “I can smooth the skin but to actually change the color is a process and even more than a process on 2-300 photos”.  As an artist I do like to give the client what she wants, and not everyone is comfortable with the feel of foundation. It is in fact my responsibility to guide the client in the right direction, because at the end of the day what you have left are those photos. Having these very important words swimming through my head allows me to gently remind my client in the chair of Jamie’s viewpoint and put that though at the forefront of all of my clients.

Up next are true words from Danette Chappell owner of Amberlight Collective.  Danette is a purist herself but believes that all of her clients should wear lipstick, not lip gloss. “First lip-gloss doesn’t stay on long and it looks like they have nothing on their lips- not a good look. I like brides in bright pinks and reds so from near or far I can see the lips and they don’t get lost” Well said Danette, I could not agree with you more, Makeup in the 702 opens a brand new, sanitary lipstick for each client. Once applied we turn around and hand the full-size lipstick to them. Bride, maid of honor, mom, doesn’t matter what role they play in the wedding- everyone gets their full-size lip product.

Chelsea Nicole told me many years ago that it’s so important that everyone in the formal professional photos have makeup professionally done. “In person, on camera and in editing group photos look zebra striped if a few people have pro makeup and a few people don’t. I can’t correct that, I can’t even pose to that format. Don’t skimp on the makeup. Figure out hair if you have to, but don’t compromise the makeup”

On the spot next, Casey Jade

Casey is all about those lashes baby! But not just about lashes, how they are applied. “Look I’m not an artist and I don’t carry glue, so if that bad boy starts falls off or peel at the edge there is nothing I can do to help. Hands down, no questions asked, the bigger the better when it comes to boudoir photography.” Moral of the story, help an artist out and listen to her when it’s time to apply false lashes. She will need to you sit still, looking down and stay there for a moment while the glue dries. If you move or fidget the lash may dry in the wrong place and be uncomfortable and worse- start peeling.

And there you have it ladies. 4 essential to dos from the folks that are photographing the history of your wedding day. Unfiltered and told the makeup artist that has the power to follow these guidelines, makeup you look like you on your most beautiful day while ensuring the history of your wedding day photos are preserved.

Please won’t you join me next week when I answer the question “How should I prep my hair for my stylist on my wedding day”. Until then, have a beautiful week!

Everything You Wanted to Know About Airbrushing

Should you choose airbrush on your wedding day?

We are passionate about achieving the end result look you want and we will stop at nothing to ensure that you look like you, on your most beautiful day.  The decision to choose traditional over airbrush should not be based on price, but determined after your artist evaluates your skin type and condition and you choose the type of coverage and texture you like. That’s right, there is not price difference between the two. How can you choose which is best for you without a greater understanding of what each of foundations are?

Traditional Foundation

liquid foundationTexture is liquid, cream or powder. Is applied with a brush or a sponge.  Coverage is determined by the actual formulation itself and can be sheer to full coverage. Traditional Foundations generally do not last as long and may not withstand some environmental conditions such as the 100-degree temps that Las Vegas has to offer.

airbrush foundationAirbrush Foundation

Texture is consistency of skim milk. Applied with an airbrush compressor and counterpart tools. Coverage can be adjusted from sheer to full coverage. Transfer and water resistant, 15+ hours of wear, can be custom blended and can cover the neck, décolleté, arms and back.

In the past decade the phrase “Airbrush” has been misused as many times as “All Natural” at the grocery store. I’ve seen everything from infomercials with celebrities to aerosol cans filled with “airbrush” foundation.  I can only speak about the tools, training and products we use at Makeup in the 702. Here’s what you need to know so you can make your based-on education, not price…

Airbrushing refers to not only to the application of foundation, but the physical formulation of the foundation as well. To help gain a better understanding of what you’re booking or in some instances paying for, ask your artist what type of compressor they use and if they use actual airbrush foundation.

iwat airbrush gunOnly an airbrush compressor that allows the artist to control the PSI is a professional compressor. Infomercial brands don’t have the airflow needed for smooth, even coverage. They’re also not made for commercial use so are likely to break and stop working when the motor gets hot from extended daily use. Certainly not what you want on your wedding day!!

Foundations also need to be made specifically for an airbrush compressor. All too often I see inexperienced makeup artists use a traditional foundation and “base it down” with water or some other liquid in an attempt to make it thin enough to pump through the compressor. First, when liquid is added to foundation it’s chemical composition is changed. This causes the inexperienced artist to use several “layers” to get the result/look needed for photos. Hence what should be weightless has now become the feeling of a pancake on a client’s skin. Even coverage is gone and any texture on the skin becomes exaggerated and glaring.

For an artist the tools and training to perform quality airbrushing services for a client are an ongoing cost. In fact, very expensive cost. Makeup in the 702 spares no expense to provide quality, long lasting results and deliver a magazine cover perfect look to our clients. Want to experience this on your wedding day?

Falling In Love- Trends You’ll See Everywhere This Season

Falling In Love

Many people get bummed to see summer come to a close. With the end of swimsuit season, no more fruity drinks with umbrellas and the days beginning to get shorter- it’s easy to see why folks could get the blues.

But then there are those people who absolutely LOVE the autumn!! Those that start at NYE to count down the days to Halloween and Thanksgiving. Those that want ALL the pumpkin spice things. Those who were meant to live in boots, jeans and flannels. For those people, this is a time to rejoice!!! This week we’ve put together a list of our favorite fall wedding trends- hope you love them as much as we do!!

METALLICS

Rose golds, platinums, bronze and silvers have been hot on the scene for about a year on every thing from phone cases to popular eyeshadow pallets, serving trays and home decor.

And as so many trends before, as goes fashion industry, so goes the wedding industry shortly after. This fall expect to see these luxurious and lavish tones EVERY WHERE- bridesmaids dresses, cakes, table scape, stationary and seating charts and just about any where else brides and grooms can cover in these glitzy hues.

 GAMES

Since the temperatures are far more tolerable than they were just a few weeks ago, plan on spending a bit of the cocktail hours playing laid back games with family friends and the bridal party.

A little bit of play time with Jenga, Bocce, or Corn Hole is a total blast for guests to play at the beginning of a reception but they are also a smart move to keep your loved ones occupied while bride, groom and wedding party are taking the formal photos after the ceremony.
Games are also a great gift idea for couples starting their new life together (many of whom are also moving in together or getting a new place to live) and one of my favorite features is that its a great opportunity for more personalizations and monograms!!!! Which weddings can always use more of!!

FURRY FRIENDS

Im not exactly sure why the trend of absolutely adorable animals at a wedding seems to have really picked up right as fall kicked off- maybe its the drop in the temperature, maybe there is a petting zoo connection…..who knows, but I am loving it!!!

There is a whole mini- industry popping up where you can rent these lovely llama guests for your wedding or any other special occasion!!

From bunny, llama, fancy chickens, goats, mini- pigs….expect to see the whole farm at weddings this season. Here are some more really adorable animal inspired weddings

BIG PAPER FLORALS

Whether using these giant hand crafted blooms as bouquets or as background decor, paper flowers area  great choice because they are just so incredibly versatile. You have so many more options and avenues to be unique and expressive when you are creating something on your own.

If you elect to make them your self, they could be quite a bit more time intensive than simply ordering fresh cuts, but there is no denying that paper and fabric are quite a bit less expensive than the real things.  See some of the best tutorials we found on the web here, for making them your self.

There are so many beautiful and creative ways to express your self at your wedding during the fall. If you think we missed your favorite- leave us a line in the comments!!

And as always, CONGRATULATIONS to all our stunning brides getting married this fall!!
