Can I just start by saying how much fun it is to work with Orange Soda Photography!  Chris and Alicia are as cool as an ice cold orange soda on a hot summer day.  They make you forget you are even at work.  During a photoshoot there is little time to really get to know the backstory of all of the incredible people we get to work with in Las Vegas so we are truly grateful today to be able to share a little bit with you about Chris and Alicia from Orange Soda Photography.

I asked Chris and Alicia to share a little bit about their business and a memorable experience they have had with Makeup in the 702 and this is what they had to say.

We are a husband and wife team here at Orange Soda Photo. We both owned our own photography business before we met. We met at a wedding show in 2008 and it was true love at first sight. We knew we belonged together so we immediately combined our businesses and Orange Soda Photography was born. Photography is all we do, and we have a great passion for the field of photography, continually trying to improve our knowledge and skill.

We have had the privilege of working often with Make Up in the 702, however, one of our most memorable experiences together was when we used Make Up in the 702 for our own maternity session. We are so accustomed to working together on events, that it was an awesome experience to be the one being pampered. They did an incredible job on Alicia’s hair and make up, and only solidified even more why we love them so much.”

What would you like a planning couple to know about Orange Soda Photography?

We love everything we do. For us, every aspect of this is positive. We get to meet cool and fun people who are excited about their wedding, or their creative portrait or family session. We get to photograph and experience people coming together to celebrate and share with each other and then we get to edit those images and deliver them to excited people who always love their images. How can you not love doing something like that?”

Do you think people have misconceptions about professional photography?

The most common misconception is that people think they’re not photogenic, when in reality is has more to do with the photographer, lighting and posing than the subject.

One of the statements we often hear is usually a variation of “I really don’t like my photo being taken” or I don’t look good in photographs”. We overcome that by engaging ourselves into the situation, we never see people as a job. We see the actual people with their own stories and backgrounds and bring that personality out. It’s one of the things we love, being part of the human experience on some of the happiest days of people’s lives.”

What are some of the benefits of choosing Orange Soda Photography?

A truly positive experience and photographs that aren’t like the norm, but still tell the story without being dated. We both started in film photography in the 80s and carry much of that over today. We’ve been photographing people since 1986 in one form or another and you don’t keep doing that unless you absolutely love what you’re doing. Chris started with his camera in the Army in Central America and Alicia traveled Europe and the US with her SLR and 3D cameras and combined we bring a set of experiences like few have.”

You’ve been doing this a long time, where do you two find your inspiration?

We find inspiration everywhere, but two favorites are high fashion and film noir. Chris’s grandfather worked in the movie industry during the depression as a cameraman, and that’s definitely carried over. Alicia often finds inspiration in the joy of family life and the strong bonds it brings.”

Persistence And Charm Gave Love A Chance

Today it’s our great pleasure to share the love story of Marco and Jueen with you.  It’s so amazing to me each and every day that we get to be a part of so many lives and so much joy.

“I think happiness is what makes you pretty. Period. Happy people are beautiful. They become like a mirror and they reflect that happiness.” – Drew Barrymore

It’s the happy people like Marco and Jueen that make our work so rewarding…..now for their story.

JM_1413“Our love story began back in 2010 when my husband, Marco, and I started working in P.F. Changs China Bistro. I had just made a dramatic job change to do something non-design related. He had just left a restaurant on the strip. It’s funny because when Marco first asked me out on a date, I said no. He thought I was playing hard to get but in reality I just wasn’t ready to date. With his persistence and charm I ended up giving him a chance. Technically our first date involved a horror movie which is ironic because we rarely ever watch them now. Fast forward almost 5 years later, we have a house together, have gotten married, and also became parents to our beautiful baby girl Camila, who’s now almost 4 months.

Marco and I really enjoy cooking together which is our favorite pass time. We love to make our food taste and look beautiful on the plate. Our dream one day is to open up our own place together and we are working towards it. Aside from that, Marco is a personal trainer by day, works in a Brazilian restaurant by night and I’m a portrait photographer. We are passionate about what we do and it shows.

You know you have a good relationship with your significant other when it’s so easy to be with them. We connect on the level that shocks me and we can read each other so well it’s almost creepy. Day in and day out, it’s never a battle and we also don’t have many debates or arguments. In addition, we are so thankful and grateful to have each other and all that is around us. Living together has taught me how to really care for someone. Not only must you be considerate of their things, understand give-and-take, and be kind to one another, you become a team that always strives to win. I truly believe that’s what we do.”

Discovering the joy with Kristen Joy Photography

We get to work with so many absolutely AMAZING photographers here our beautiful city of Las Vegas. Today we are so happy to introduce you to Kristen Joy Photography she truly is a “joy” to work with and seems to experience so much of her own joy from her work.

Happiness lies in the joy of achievement and the thrill of creative effort~Franklin D. Roosevelt

Kristen can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got started as a photographer?

Hmmmm, A little about me, I love weddings, I love all the little details and joy that comes from the day. I love working with brides and seeing their visions come to life. I originally started as a family photographer, when I received the chance to be a second shooter for an amazing photographer, I realized I was missing out on all the fun! I started in 2007 and have been photographing weddings ever since.

I especially love working with you at Makeup in the 702 because you are so talented at what you do. I work to make every individual client happy and it’s hard to find others in this town with the same mindset. I remember working with you on a shoot in the dry lake bed, when I told you my ideas, you were just as excited as I was. I love that you have passion for your work and joy shines through every email and phone call.”

What kind of misconceptions do you think people have about wedding photography?

There can be misconceptions about wedding photography, one that sticks out to me is, when a person sees the photos after the wedding or event and says, “Wow you must have a really nice camera.” It make me giggle a bit, because all though most wedding photographers do have nice cameras, we take our job seriously and consider ourselves artists. I happen to shoot a lot of film photography as well, my film camera probably cost me less than most peoples iphones, but I can produce beautiful works of art on that 35mm camera.

There are a millions benefits to hiring a professional photographer. One major benefit to hiring a professional photographer is you will be able to view your timeless memories over and over with the confidence that they will turn out. I hear people say, “my friend just bought a camera, so he is going to photograph my wedding.” My heart hurts a bit hearing that, you spend so much money on your wedding day and are risking losing those timeless photographs.”

What challenges and inspires you?

I find so much inspiration in Las Vegas, not the Strip and casino Vegas, but the landscape, the Red Rocks, the Dry lake Beds, the succulents, our scenery is so diverse. I love the highlighting that our unique landscape adds to my photographs. I’m so thankful to work in such a fun and inspiring community like Las Vegas. We are a hub of amazing talent and it truly pushes me to be the top in field daily.”

Creating the perfect wedding look! Wedding makeup doesn’t come easy every bride is different every venue is different and every photographer is different. Your makeup artist and hair stylist are the very first vendor you interact with on your wedding day, and we take that responsibility very seriously. We understand how vital our role is, especially for weddings, and we set the tone for the entire wedding day. But we don’t feel like that’s pressure, just an awesome responsibility.

At the risk of sounding a bit crass I have to put this out there, this is a service that you do not want to cheap out on. Hair and makeup can make or break the history of your wedding day photos. At the end of the day when the dancing is done and you’ve dashed off to begin your life anew the only thing that will be left to help you re-live the happiest day of your life are the magical moments captured in the photography.

With Las Vegas being the wedding capital of the World we meet brides from everywhere and this unpredictable desert weather can be a challenge in any season that is why highly recommend taking your makeup for a test drive so to speak and schedule a demo day.

We mentioned budget a moment ago, here’s a bonus tip for you where you can score a two-for-one. Schedule your demo the same day as your engagement shoot!

Airbrushing-Dispelling the Myths

February 13, 2015

What is airbrushing?

Airbrushing is a very generic term used these days, similar to the word term “All Natural” in food. You must dig a little deeper to have a clear understanding of what it is and what the benefits are. I’m extremely passionate about airbrushing and want to help exploit some of the myths and of course raise the bar of standards in the industry to my fellow artists.

First, please know that I can only speak to the tools, training and products we use. Know there are imitations out there, and I’ll explain more in detail.

maxresdefaultWe’ve been utilizing airbrush for over a decade and in this period of time I’ve seen cosmetic companies claim to have airbrush foundation in an aerosol can. I’ve seen personal at home “compressors” sold on home shopping channel and everything in between. Please, allow me to explain in great detail what airbrushing is, it’s benefits and of course why we continue to be the leader in the industry.

First, airbrushing refers not just to the “end result” but the actual tool. A true airbrush compressor is about 25 pounds in weight and is used for many artist uses. The user can control the amount of air (PSI) that comes through and will do so based upon what they need the end result to be. Please do not be fooled by Home Shopping Network or At Home Use Products. That is not a true, professional compressor. I can blow foundation on you better than those contraptions.

hqdefaultSecond, airbrushing refers to actual foundation used. One cannot use a “traditional”  over the counter foundation in an airbrush compressor. The product will not pump through the compressor! Professional foundations used for airbrushing are a liquid almost water consistency.   They are costly for any artist to use, but the end result is hands down the only way to go for a client. Don’t be fooled by inexperienced artist that “base” down traditional foundation or “water” it down so that it will pump through a compressor. By doing that, one changes the inherit chemistry of the product itself, leaving the client with a less than finished end result and a foundation that will not last but a few hours.

Third, and this is one of the most frequently asked questions by our clients. Will I look cakey or feel like I have makeup on? Simply stated, no… How can something that is water based and applied with air feel heavy or look heavy. It can’t. Again based upon the principles from above.

Picture3

So why all the hype??? Because it’s awesome!  Nothing like it!! We love that we are able to custom blend a clients foundation on the spot. Analyzing the true undertones of the skin as well as the type and condition. That mean’s a PERFECT match- EVERY TIME!!!! Not an almost match color swatch. We are able to take airbrush foundation past the face and down the neck, chest, decollate, arms and back- basically any piece of skin showing beyond the dress. Covering, tan lines, freckles and red splotchy sun damage- imparting a “photoshopped” appearance both in person as well as on camera.

Speaking of camera- HD friendly. High Definition cameras and film point out every flaw under even the best of lighting, almost like human eyes. They are unforgiving, but with HD foundation and airbrushing, you can look like the cover of Vogue in person and in photos.

product-guarantee-icon1Lastly, and this is super important for events in Las Vegas. We stand behind our work so strongly, that we will Guarantee 15 hour water and transfer resistant makeup. It’s 115 degrees out- no problem. Tears of joy- no problem.  Cutting up a rug on the dance floor- no problem- GUARANTEED.
